My thoughts, my feelings and not feelings.
It’s hard to know where to begin or what to write about. I’ll start heavy and cringe to some of you. The week of Charlie's assassination, I cried privately, at least twice a day for three days.
Over these past few days, I went through different stages of processing his death. Shock – sadness - confusion – anger – understanding/contentment. These emotions continued to loop for the days to come. To no one's surprise, momentum on social media picked up quickly, playing on everyone's emotions during their grief or, for some, celebrations. You see pastors calling out Canadian churches for not centering their services around an American political activist. You see corks being popped for the death of a father, husband, brother in Christ. Everyone is angry, some fe
arful. You have people from your own congregations unfollowing each other. My heart hurts for this divide.
To the insta-pastors calling out churches to rise and preach about Charlie’s death, do you honestly think this man, who constantly quoted John 3:30, “He must increase, but I must decrease,” would want to be elevated in a sanctuary like that? It is times like these that show your truest colours. Do you know scripture? Do you know your bible? Because when these influencers start determining what needs to be preached in your hometown church, I pray you have enough biblical knowledge to discern for yourself and don’t get lost in the wind. Pray for your pastors and your churches. What a wild time to be shepherding a body of people through all of these world events happening.
To the angry people, don’t lose yourself. We need to continue on and be set apart. We must love each other even when it's hard. Relentlessly posting and diving off the deep end into conspiracy theories won’t bring Charlie back. Engaging in rage bait with people who are giddy about another man's death won’t bring healing. Use this time, this fire, to bring people to Christ.
There is so much going through my head about this past week, but I will sign off with this:
To the Christians who either loved or disliked Charlie, the world is watching us.
