God's Influence

Choosing our influencers carefully

We are surrounded by influencers. They offer wisdom on financial freedom, weight loss, food, parenting, health, and the list goes on. My question for you is, would you read a book about parenting written by someone with only small children or maybe no children at all? Would you take financial advice from someone who drives an expensive car but is living pay cheque to pay cheque? I can only hope your answer is no. We need to choose who we allow to influence our lives carefully. The same goes with the gospel. We can throw profound words into a sentence followed by a verse from Proverbs and throw that onto a pretty picture we stitched together on Canva but are you really reading what is being said to you? When we spend no time in our bibles and our only influence of God becomes what we feed ourselves on social media through these influencers we can lose sight on our own relationship with Jesus. How often do you follow up on a Christian bloggers post, really dive into what he or she shared? Is it right? Is it biblically true? Or does it just sound nice and because it’s followed with a bible verse it must be legit right? You will find yourself feeling convicted followed by confusion and a very uneasy feeling.

This thought first came to me from an influencer stating that “A child is a blessing from God, therefore if we do not have children, we are REJECTING a blessing from God.” Sounds silly right? What concerned me was how many people were liking and sharing this. Do you not realize we are not all individual people with plans God made specifically for us? We are not all called to have 9 children. Some of us are called to have no children at all and that can be a blessing in its own way. THIS is why it is important to feed your personal relationship with Jesus through prayer and scripture. Choose your influencers carefully and most of all, make God your greatest influencer of all.

It is great to find seasoned people we trust and look up to but don’t rely on their experience and their relationship with Jesus to feed your own relationship. The secret to living a Christ like life is not having X number of children like that influencer. It is not homeschooling. It is not sending your kids to a fancy Christian private school. Some of the most God loving people I know, went through the entire public school system. Some of these God loving women I know don't follow a single influencer on social media. We are giving these social media influencers too much power on our own lives.

I will leave you with these verses.

Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 1 John 4:1

For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. 2 Timothy 4:3-4
